This beautiful sculpture of an owl by Boniface Chikwenhere is created from found leadwood, an extremely slow growing, long lived species indigenous to Southern Africa. Very dense, the wood was once used for railway sleepers and is now prized for ornamental work and furniture making. The sculpture stands on custom designed metal 'claws' and is completely stable.
Each one-of-a-kind sculpture is inspired by the character of the found wood, Boniface seeing his mission as completing nature's work and revealing the animal form that he sees emerging from the grain of the wood. Often the wood is left raw in part of the finished piece, the natural and polished surfaces making a harmonious whole.
All sculptures are fumigated and shipped with a fumigation certificate.
